The far and away largest percentage of our membership are in their 70’s so far as physical health is
concerned. Infirmities, illnesses, and health problems are now, lamentably, a part of our day-to-day life.
Two great currently active members are undergoing serious physical problems at this time.
John Sonley, our Sergeant at Arms, has just recently passed through some life-ending ailments. John,
being a retired policeman AND of the 5th "I’LL TRY, SIR" RCT, Korea, tradition, has gritted his teeth and
not let us in on his situation. He is now better but may be facing a choice that will one day confront most
of us, that of giving up a part of our independent living. Knowing Big John, I trust that he will be successful
in regaining his health. That is very much my personal prayer for him.
My other health concern today is for Canadian KVA President Les Peate (and LR20470, KVA Chapter 299,
KWVA). Basically, Les is facing some orthopedic rebuilding/manufacturing that will lay him up for a considerable
time. I am writing this update from Seoul, KOREA, where I will participate in the National 55th observance
of June 25, 1950. If Les were healthy, he would be here and be a featured speaker. Get well, my friend.
Since arriving in Seoul late June 21, I have presented letters to ROK and KVA, Seoul, officials outlining
some of our recruiting concerns which they can possibly assist in solving. As I write this update I am preparing
to meet with General LEE, Sang-Hoon, Chairman, The Korean Veterans Association, Ministry of Patriot and
Veterans Affairs, to share our common concerns. I am scheduled to meet with US officials beginning June
27.
Late this evening (June 23) a group of our members - 32 of them - will arrive on this year’s first regular
Revisit Program. I want to again urge as many of our members as possible to participate in the Revisit Program
while they can - one day health will preclude most of us from participating.
Best wishes, for ALL veterans,
President
