More than 50 years have passed since the Korean War, but veteran Rudy Green felt proud that a new memorial finally recognized those who served in the war.

On Saturday, their sacrifices were remembered with the dedication of the Korean War Veterans Memorial, located at the southwest corner of 119th Street and Lowell Avenue in Overland Park. Such dignitaries as the Republic of Korea consul general and a former chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Gen. Richard Myers, spoke.

Construction began in early May on the 75-foot-long memorial honoring Kansas service members killed in action in the war. The 8-foot-high granite structure lists the names of 415 service members who lost their lives, including two Medal of Honor recipients.

The Korean War Veterans Association Chapter 181, Kansas #1, raised about $675,000 for the memorial through private and corporate donations.
